Match Preview: Hawarden Rangers vs Bala Town



It's JD Welsh Cup weekend this week, as the Lakesiders start their campaign with a trip to the Gladstone Playing Fields to take on Hawarden Rangers in the Second Round of the Cup.


Hawarden Rangers compete in the Ardal North West League and currently occupy 8th place in a league which consists of 15 teams. The Club have a rich history of past players that have gone on to play professionally, including Ballon D'or winner Michael Owen, Liverpool & Wales Legend Ian Rush and former Everton defender Barry Horne.

Insight Into Our Opponents

Hawarden Rangers were founded in 1974 by Elwyn Owen and currently play in the third tier of Welsh Football. The club's patron is the grandson of Victorian Prime Minister; Sir William Gladstone. It was he, who had the foresight to leave the Gladstone Playing Fields to the local people for future enjoyment and recreation, which is the reasoning behind the Hawarden Castle gates on the club crest.


The Club who are managed by Andrew Butler; currently have a record of two wins, one draw and three defeats in the league. They progressed through to the current stage of the JD Welsh Cup by way of a penalty shootout against Abermule last month following a 2-2 draw in normal time, and ultimately won 5-3 in the shootout.


So far this season, Ellis Jones is there top scorer who has contributed three goals in the league, with two of his goals coming in Hawarden's 5-5 draw with Rhostyllen just two weeks ago.


Hawarden come into the match on the back of a 2-0 victory over Bodedern Athletic, with Thomas Gunson grabbing a goal either side of the half to give his side the victory.
