It was a superb start to the Bank Holiday weekend for the Town, as goals from Edwards, Shannon and Mendes; without reply, gave us our first three points of the season!
It took a while for the Lakesiders to find their feet in the game, however, following the first goal just on the half hour mark, the tables turned and the Town seemed to look more threatening on the attack.
A Quick One-Two
Despite the visitors dominating the opening proceedings, the Town grew into the game and with a touch of class; took the lead! Lassana Mendes recycled a Naim Arsan ball into the box, and with the deftest of touches, our number seven dinked the ball over the top of the Newtown defence, into the path of Dave Edwards who striked the ball home on the volley to give the Town the lead.
It took less than two minutes and the Town had doubled their advantage! A pin-point ball into the box from Ollie Southern found Ollie Shannon charging in, who managed to brilliantly loop the ball over the top of Dave Jones into the far left corner, doubling his tally for the season.
Robins Look To Hit Back
The second half got underway in the same style as the first, with Newtown looking to halve the deficit, however some brilliant defending from Nathan Peate shut out former Lakesider; Louis Robles, who looked to have a clear shot on goal, only for our number four to recover well and block the shot out for a corner.
Aaron Williams then went even closer to bring his side back into the game, as he popped up at the back post with a header around 2 yards out, but was unable to find the back of the net from a tight angle.
Magic Mendes!
Just minutes after Aaron Williams' had a golden chance to get his side off the mark, Magic Mendes all but sealed the victory! A looping cross in from the left by Naim Arsan was headed down nicely by Venables into the path of Mendes, who controlled the ball well with his midriff and poked the ball home to seal a 3-0 victory for the Town.
There was a brilliant moment just minutes from the end, as Academy player Michael Ashworth came on to make his senior debut for the Club, as he replaced the Man of the Match; Lassana Mendes. Ashworth almost created our fourth with his first few touches, as he sent a teasing ball into the box for Nathan Peate to get on the end of, but Dave Jones was able to collect in the final seconds of the match.
Our attention turns quickly to Tuesday 30th of August, as we head to Deeside to take on Connah's Quay Nomads for Matchday Four of the Cymru Premier season, with kick off at 7:45pm.
