The Lakesiders got their Nathaniel MG Cup campaign off to a blistering start, as we brushed past Chirk AAA FC with a 6-1 win at Holyhead Road on Sunday.
This was the first competitive match for the Town since our devastating penalty shootout defeat to Sligo Rovers, as we crashed out of the Europa Conference League at the first hurdle. The pre-season cobwebs were dusted off pretty quickly at Holyhead Road, as a goal from Dave Edwards in the first minute of the match set the Lakesiders off for the afternoon.
On The Attack From The Off
As soon as the referee's whistle went for kick off, it didn't take long for the first goal to come, as Dave Edwards got on the end of a Paul Rutherford cross to head home from close range inside the first minute.
It wasn't long before our lead was doubled, as some brilliant link up play between Rutherford and Mendes lead to a simple tap-in from Mendes after just quarter of an hour.
Dave Edwards Gets His Brace
Just minutes before the end of the first half, the Town were awarded a free kick within shooting distance on the right hand side. Edwards stepped up to take the free kick, and hit a sweet strike into the top left hand corner to take us into the break with a 3-0 lead.
Newell Finds The Net
The second half got off to the same start as the first, as George Newell grabbed his first competitive goal for the club with a simple enough tap-in from close range to set us on our way for the second half.
Luke Wall also grabbed his first competitive goal for the club after coming on for Paul Rutherford, as he hit a low effort from the edge of the six-yard box to add a fifth goal for the Town.
The Captain Rounds The Afternoon Off
The home side managed to grab a goal back with around 25 minutes to go, as a mistake at the back gave Steffan Rogers a tap-in to give his side something to cheer about.
The Captain Chris Venables came on to replace George Newell, and got on the scoresheet within five minutes to round the afternoon off. A corner came into danger area, and after a scramble on the goal line, Venners was there to smash the ball home right on the line after the original effort from Ross White.
The Third Round draw for the Nathaniel MG Cup will be streamed live on the JD Cymru Leagues Facebook Page on Thursday evening.
Up next for the Lakesiders will be Penybont to kick off our JD Cymru Premier campaign, as we travel to the SDM Glass Stadium on Sunday 14th of August, with kick off at 2:30pm.
